My name is Kieren and I am Mercy Corps’ Syria Director. In northwest Syria, we provide clean water, hygiene kits, food and cash so that people can purchase health supplies… Read more and other items they most urgently need.
We’re concerned about the destruction that this kind of virus could have. In camps for internally displaced people, social distancing is a dream but if we are going to prevent a massive outbreak we have to make it a reality. Safe hygiene is already a massive challenge under the best of circumstances: clean water is a luxury, soap isn’t guaranteed. We’re requiring safe distances when people line up to receive aid, wearing PPE, increasing the amount of water and soap we provide to each family, and installing latrines and more water tanks.
This pandemic will exacerbate existing humanitarian needs, and make responding in these complex environments even more challenging. We are working with our donors to pivot existing responses, but we need support, now more than ever, to respond to a pandemic on top of an existing emergency.
